Roasting Marshmellows in Lava

A check off the list! This weekend I roasted marshmellows atop Volcan Pacaya! Pacaya is about an hour and a half drive from Antigua...from it you can see the other close volcanos, including Volcan Fuego, which we can see erupting regularly from Antigua, and Volcan Agua, the dormant volcano on which Santa María is built.

It was a nice, semi-difficult hike up the volcano to where we were in as close proximity to the flowing lava as we could be (it depends each day on the wind conditions and such). This was a really cool experience, as we were walking on top of lava from between 2 and 40 years ago! The highest point we could reach was windy and cold, but you could feel intense heat rising up and heating the souls of your feet -- a rock even melted into the bottom of Alana´s shoe! We were prepared with a big bag of jumbo marshmellows and sticks for some great photo-ops!

Little kids at the base of the volcano ¨rent¨out these walking sticks for a few Quetzals...they really helped for the part of the hike on the old lava
In this photo you can see the lava flowing...as the sun set we were able to see more and more
S´mores anyone??

A gorgeous sunset from the top
